Sometimes you just need to get out of the city for a couple of days. A quick jaunt out of the bustling metropolis to unwind and recharge your batteries with your partner (and try to pull yourself away from that glued-to-your-hand phone) is all we really need sometimes—but it’s not always possible to get away for a mini vacation when extensive (and expensive) travel is involved. Thankfully, there’s Niagara-on-the-Lake. Situated about an hour and a half south of Toronto, across Lake Ontario (a little bit closer than Niagara Falls), this quaint little town has plenty to offer: rest, relaxation and romance being right at the top of the list. Pair this charming locale with the chic, modern and super cozy 124 on Queen Hotel and Spa and you’ve got the perfect formula for a weekend retreat for busy couples.

The six-building property houses guest rooms and villas (they even have three-bedroom villas if you’re planning on going with a few couples), providing an intimate and neighbourly feel. Amenities include a fitness centre, meeting room (if you can’t pull yourself away from business), rooftop terraces for warm summer nights and even a Starbucks (for those who still need their morning brew remniscient of home), all steps from your room.

For Foodies:

While Niagara-on-the-Lake may be small and quaint, it doesn’t fall short when it comes to cuisine. This picturesque town was ranked Canada’s number one food and wine destination, and there’s a good reason for it. Within a five-minute walk up Queen Street from the hotel, you’re met with a handful of restaurants that will surely sate any culinary craving. The only problem is choosing what restaurant to taste test first.

For Curious Strollers:

Peruse the boutiques, galleries and shops (like the Oliv Tasting Room that has over 40 flavours of olive oil and balsamic vinegar) or take a walk by the lake for an extra dose of calm. If you’re up to the scare, there’s even a Ghost Walk you can go on in the evening to check out all of the allegedly haunted houses in the area—and since this town is so rich in history, you’re sure to catch a few.

Relax in grandeur
Recently renovated and rebranded (formerly the Victorian Villas), 124 on Queen is inviting and charming while providing that luxurious feeling of staying in a five-star hotel. Whether you opt for one of the guest rooms or decide to indulge in one of the villas to up the romance factor, you’ll get that pampered feeling while still maintaining a cozy ambiance. Everything from the upgraded and modern kitchens in the villas to the melt-into-dreamland beds, you’ll take one look and never want to leave.

Feast like the locals
The available-year-round Spa-liday package offers a four-course prix fixe menu at the hotel’s restaurant Treadwell. From your first sip of the creamless mushroom soup, to the last nibble of the flourless chocolate cake (complete with homemade marshmallows—yes, homemade and they were as good as they sound), you’ll be hooked. This restaurant prides itself on “farm-to-table” cuisine. And even though it’s an extra fee for the wine pairing (about $40 per person to have a glass paired with each of the four courses), it’s worth your while as each of the glasses of vino bring out the flavour of each of the dishes. All of the wines are carefully selected by a sommelier at the start of each course and are all from local wineries in the area (“This winery is five minutes down the road” was said on more than one occasion), so you’re drinking and dining while supporting the local economy. Win-win.

Rejuvenation with a bit of romance
Available with the Spa-liday package are two 60-minute couples’ massages, allowing you to unwind and de-stress with your partner. The recently renovated spa has a chic and contemporary look without being too formal or sacrificing the serene and relaxing feel of a spa. The massage and treatment rooms are on the lower level, removed from the hustle and bustle of pedestrians and traffic, giving you the perfect peace and quiet you came to enjoy. Greeted with a smile as you come in off Queen Street, you’re instantly escorted to a quiet and tranquil lounge where you await your pampering session and can let the relaxation process really kick in.
