Simple tips to keep your feet in tip-top shape this summer.

1. Proper Footwear: As a rule going barefoot is discouraged (even at home), as this is when most foot injuries occur. “Improper footwear significantly contributes to foot deformity.” Women with a love for heels “should vary the height of their heels everyday,” says Dr. Chelin. However, “shoes with heels, rocker bottom soles and shoes without support make symptoms manifest. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, wear sensible roomy shoes that support the feet properly,” says Dr. Miltchin.

2. Healthy Hygiene: Good hygiene prevents skin disease, so wash feet daily, dry thoroughly between the toes and trim nails regularly (always cut straight across). Feet need to breathe when it comes to socks and footwear, so choose natural materials (cotton and wool) over synthetics. Plus change your socks and air out shoes daily.

3. Cautious Pedicures: “Ensure the use of healthy nail products and make sure all instruments are sterilized before each and every use. Bring your own basecoat and nail polish with you, don’t share these items with others!” warns Dr. Chelin.

4. Strengthen Feet: Increase foot strength with simple exercises, such as rolling the foot on a tennis ball and doing towel curls with your toes. This will strengthen the foot’s core and prevent foot pain.

5. Rich Moisture: The skin on the soles of our feet is 20 times thicker than the rest of our foot, plus our feet lose a pint of moisture everyday, so use products with good penetrability.

6. Doctor’s Orders: Keep on top of foot health problems with yearly foot exams by your foot-care specialist.
