12 10 coconut water oil health benefits weightlossWe share news about the health hype surrounding coconuts.

Not only is coconut a delicious flourish on any dessert, but this tropical fruit (and its byproducts) have some potentially amazing health benefits.

Read on for more reasons why you may want to go cuckoo for coconuts!

1. Coconut water is nature’s Gatorade

A recent scientific analysis by Chhandashri Bhattacharya, PhD, from Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, found that coconut water (the clear liquid found in young, green coconuts) has five times more potassium than a typical sports drink. (Potassium helps get rid of muscle cramps and replenish lost nutrients.) However, it may not be good for people who engage in strenuous exercise because it’s low in sodium, something the body needs to replenish after sweating a lot.

2. Coconut oil can help prevent tooth decay

Researchers at the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland found that coconut oil may act as an antibacterial in the mouth (and could possibly be added to dental hygiene products in the future). Coconut oil was found to stop the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria, a major cause of tooth decay.

3. Coconut oil can help lead to weight loss…in moderation

While more studies need to be conducted to investigate claims that coconut oil can increase your metabolism, consider exchanging it with your regular cooking oil or butter. Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs, a type of fat that is easily digested and turned into energy (rather than fat). It’s also healthier for you because it raises HDL, the good kind of cholesterol your body needs. Some studies also suggest coconut oil can help slow down the digestion of food, making you feel fuller for longer (and lead to weight loss through less snacking).

Don’t overindulge though, as coconut oil still contains a fair amount of calories (like any oil).
