Catching quality zzzs during the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a never-ending to-do list is challenging, to say the least. To help you stay on track and make sure you’re getting the right amount of shut eye, here are six tips to help you regulate your sleep routine. You’ll be sure to wake up feeling rested each morning.

1. Stop tossing and turning.Dream Water

If you find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night, do yourself a favour and have some Dream Water. Fall asleep peacefully with the help of Dream Water ($3.99, drugstores and health food stores). This natural, Health Canada-approved remedy contains melatonin, GABA and 5-HTP to help you drift off, stay asleep and wake up feeling refreshed. Take the remedy 30 minutes before bed. Just be sure to consult with your doctor if you’re also taking medications, and don’t combine with alcohol.

2. Rock a routine.

Regardless of how busy you are with gift shopping, party planning and more, Andrea Donsky, registered holistic nutritionist and wellness expert recommends that you keep a consistent sleep and wake time. “A healthy sleep routine helps tell your body that it’s time to wind down and get ready for bed,” says Donsky. “It also helps your body know when to release hormones in your body that help with sleep, such as melatonin.”

3. Put a hiatus on electronics.

“Avoid electronics—yes, your phone, too!—an hour before bed,” says Donsky. “The light they emit can disturb your sleep and keep you up.”

4. Sleep on silk.

Whether it’s a silk pillowcase or a full silk sheet set, this is an essential to help you feel rested. Silk stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so you’ll feel super-cozy. Silk also helps keep your hair shiny and smooth, allowing you to extend your blowouts and spend less time in the morning doing your hair. Finally, silk is gentler on your skin than cotton, so you’re less likely to develop sleep creases. We love the silk pillowcases and sheet sets from Cilque ($69 for pillowcases and $450 for a complete sheet set, cilque.com).

5. Take a nap.

“If you’re feeling exhausted, sneak in a nap whenever you can,” says Donsky. But be careful not to sleep too long. Keep your naps to 30 minutes maximum so you don't interfere with your night sleep patterns.

6. Soothe yourself.

Since stress disrupts restful sleep, try taking a relaxing bath or something else that soothes you if you’re feeling stressed,” says Donsky. “This will put your mind and body at ease so that you can rest properly.”
