Three things you need in your life this winter to add extra impact to your fitness and health resolutions.

It’s February, a month full of darkness, frigid weather and grey skies: Three things that can really prevent us from committing to those fitness and health resolutions we made on January 1. But don’t let the case of February blahs give you an excuse to give up and revert back to your former unmotivated late-2016 self—yes I’m talking about the former you who on December 28 was lounging on the couch with a half eaten bag of dill pickle chips, wine and stretchy Christmas pants you vowed to put to rest on boxing day (really I mean me, just adjust the snacks and outfit to fit yourself and you’ll get the picture).  2016 was a tough year for most of the world and 2017 isn’t exactly turning out to be the best (yet…I’m an optimist)—have you been watching the news?

The key during the grey winter months is to not chastise yourself if you need a little extra push to follow through on fitness and health goals.  Instead find new ways to keep your fitness goals fun and interesting. Keeping all of this in mind I’ve been working hard on keeping a positive mindset so I can continue to motivate myself while also testing out new products to help me meet my 2017 health goals. Here are three items I’ve recently tried that are helping me stick to my fitness guns and my personal commitment to put my wellness first above all this year.

Stylish and Functional Running Shoes

Although I am not a runner, I enjoy high impact aerobic activities including zumba and training classes. This winter I started up my zumba classes again with my sister. It’s our weekly hang out as sisters and after class we usually eat dinner together at my condo and catch up.  As much as I love zumba, since the work out takes place on a hardwood floor (our classes are hosted in my condo party room) the high impact exercise can be hard on my knees and joints. The Saucony Guide 10 ($169.99, running shoe provides my feet with enough support to protect my knees from the impact of literally jumping around on a hardwood floor without being too light weight. If a running shoe is too light, it feels more like a slipper and my legs get achy. Bonus: The monochromatic turquoise design is modern and happens to go well with my gym clothes. As a person who aims to still look stylish when I workout, I look forward to wearing my Saucony Guide 10 shoes.

A Power Breakfast

Genuine Health Fermented Whole Body Nutrition Acai Mango

I usually don’t have a lot of time for breakfast in the morning since I would rather sleep an extra 30 minutes then eat before heading to work. That being said breakfast is the most important meal of the day. To fit my busy lifestyle and lack of enthusiasm for rising early, my breakfast of choice is a well-balanced smoothie that features a mix of spinach leaves, berries, chia seeds, a non-dairy milk and a protein source. Although I’ve been doing this for years, I find that a lot of protein and superfood sources taste horrible and also make me bloated. But since I added Genuine Health Fermented Whole Body Nutrition with Greens+ ($65, visit for retail availability) I’ve enjoyed my smoothie a lot more as I don’t get bloated and I also feel fuller longer. In one to two scoops, my body gets fueled with fermented phytonutrients, protein, fibre, vitamin D and essential fatty acids, which is pretty impressive in comparison to regular whey protein powders. What’s so different, you ask? Genuine Health’s products all go through a fermentation process that ensures our gut can fully absorb all of the nutrients while also eliminating embarrassing and unwanted after effects like gas and bloating. Although I personally prefer the unflavoured version, for those who prefer more sweetness, Genuine Health Fermented Whole Body Nutrition with Greens+ is also available in acai mango and vanilla chai flavours. I simply blend my smoothie and pop into a travel cup to enjoy on my daily subway commute to the office.

Improving My Immune System

For the first time in a couple of winters I was hit with a horrible flu and sick on and off for most of December and January, so its evident that my immune system took a big hit.  That’s why it was a no brainerfor me to try Village Juicery’s Warming Greens during my flu. The seasonal juice blend helps boost the immune system with the help of Vitamin C, antioxidants and anti-viral boosting ingredients including ginger, citrus, romaine, kale, cinnamon, turmeric and chard. For more daily consumption though I’m in love with the beet based Be Active Blend that is more balanced in flavour with a mixture of pear, beet, apple, ginger and lemon with just the right amount  of sweetness.
