Ditch the junk food and try a quick workout instead—you’ll feel better and have the presence of mind to rise above whatever is grinding your gears. Fitness guru and Nike Master Trainer Eva Redpath shares one of the best exercises you can do at home to beat the winter blahs.

One Simple Exercise to Lower Stress and Build Strength

“The best strength exercises use added weight to help tone your muscles. One of my favourite moves is the Dumbbell squat and press. It activates your core, legs and shoulders, giving you a full-body burn,” says Redpath.

For this exercise you will require two dumbbells. Here's the step-by-step breakdown:

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and raise the dumbbells so that they are parallel to your shoulder width apart and raise the dumbbells so that they are parallel to your shoulders.
  • Begin lowering yourself into a squat, keeping your upperbody at a 45-degree angle and your body and your weight on your heels.
  • Once you reach your lowered squat position, explode up to a standing positionand follow through with your shoulder press by raising the dumbbells above your head.
  • Return to your starting position and repeat.
