13 07 levulan ipl cream skin treatmentDescription: Levulan is aminolevulinic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, and can be used before Blue Light or IPL to treat acne.

How it's done: The substance is applied and absorbed into the skin and converted into a potent photosensitizer. When used with Blue Light, the substance is activated and sebaceous glands are shrunken, reducing acne. Levulan must sit on the skin for 30 minutes to one hour before the Blue Light treatment, which takes eight to 15 minutes, or IPL, which takes a bit longer. Two to four treatments of Levulan with Blue Light or IPL are needed to significantly clear moderate to severe acne. Acne may stay in remission for six months to a year.

Complications: Blisters or scabbing may occur if you go into the sun after the treatment. If you have a history of cold sores a prescription of Valtrex is required.

Recovery: Mild stinging or a burning sensation can occur during and after the treatment. You must stay out of the sun for 48 hours after, and wear SPF 30 at all times. You may be red for several hours or days, with swelling around the eyes.

Cost: Blue Light and IPL with Levulan: $450 and up/treatment.
