How it’s done: First, medical causes, reactional hair loss or any kind of dermatological conditions must be ruled out before hair transplants can be considered. The latest hair transplant technology use micro-graphs, rather than plugs, to thicken the hair. Hair is taken from a donor area (usually the back or sides of the scalp) and moved to affected areas. The hair must then be protected from the sun and washed thoroughly to make sure scabbing does not occur (which can impede the growth of new hair). There is only one thin scar visible on the scalp afterward, which is camouflaged by hair.

Complications: Swelling, itching (which must be immediately treated), scabbing and shock loss may occur.

Recovery: One to three days. During the first ten days the hair may fall out, but within a couple of months it will grow back normally in the transplanted areas. It takes about a year for hair to grow back with optimal fullness.

Cost: $6,500 and up, depending on the amount of coverage needed.
