One of the latest facial rejuvenation technologies, eTwo promises to diminish signs of aging safely and effectively. We asked dermatologist Dr. Sheetal Sapra, MD, FRCPC, who's been in the industry for 20 years, how it works and why it's one of the best technologies he's seen to hit the cosmetic world.

Q. What is eTwo?

A. eTwo is the newly introduced, FDA-cleared aesthetic device that includes two unique treatments called Sublative and Sublime for a Complete Facial Rejuvenation.

Q. How does eTwo work?

A. Sublative utilizes fractionated bi-polar radio frequency that targets the upper layer of the skin to treat superficial imperfections associated with the skin's overall clarity and texture. Sublime utilizes Syneron's proprietary elos technology of light (infra-red) and bi-polar radio frequency for deep dermal heating required to improve the deeper placed imperfections such as wrinkles.

Q. How long have you been working with this technology?

A. The eTwo is new to market; however, ICLS has been working with Radio Frequency technology for many years.

Q. What makes eTwo unique? How does it differ from other facial rejuvenation procedures?

A. With eTwo, we can now treat both the upper and deep layer of the skin effectively and safely with energies that are proven to be safe for all skin types.

Q. Who is a good candidate for this treatment?

A. Sublative and Sublime are treatments that work to diminish the early signs of aging by naturally restoring the collagen that is lost with time and age. These treatments are perfect for all skin types and ideal for patients seeking a glowing and smooth complexion but can't afford the days of downtime often associated with other energy-based treatments. Any patient who is looking to improve texture (acne scars, pore size, fine lines and wrinkles), tone, and tightening and over all luminosity is a candidate for a Sublative treatment with eTwo.

Q. Is anyone not a good candidate for eTwo?

A. The eTwo is safe for all skin types. Like any energy device, patients are required to fill out a detailed questionnaire about their medical history and current health, which will further determine if they are a candidate.

Q. What results should patients expect to see?

A. A complete facial rejuvenation from bottom to top.

Q. What is the treatment protocol?

A. Sublative and Sublime can be performed as individual treatments or together depending on the patient.

Q. What does it feel like?

A. During treatment, many patients feel a warm, prickly sensation. Topical esthetic ointments and cooling can be used to reduce any discomfort during treatment.

Q. What is the expected social downtime?

A. Social downtime is no more than 24 hours with the complete treatment. The Sublative treatment does cause micro-sized wounds to the skin— some patients may apply post-treatment emollient cream to the treatment area but we advise patients not to apply anything on the skin for 24 hours while the skin heals. Patients will be mildly red, much like a mild sunburn, but can apply unscented, mineral-based makeup after 24 hours of their treatment session.

Q. Are there any potential side effects or risks?

A.The eTwo Sublative and Sublime treatments have proven to be very safe on all skin types. With any energy system there is always risk associated with the treatment. With the eTwo and radio frequency delivery, we have been able to minimize this and, in worst-case scenarios, there have been minor burns and hypo/ hyperpigmentation changes.

It is important however to note that these are highly irregular and have been attributed to user error. The adverse effects have not been experienced in the general usage of the system. This is a radio frequency-based system; therefore, optical burns experienced with laser and IPL are never experienced.

Q. How many treatments will the patient need?

A. Each patient's treatment protocol will vary based on individual needs and desired results. Most patients will receive three to four treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.

Q. When can patients expect to see results?

A. Patients will begin to see results after the first treatment and results will continue to improve up to one-year post treatment.

Q. What is the treatment cost?

A. Treatment costs vary but, on average, each treatment will cost $600 to $900.

Q. How long do results last?

A. Results have proven to continue improving over the course of 12 months. After a series of treatments, one treatment every six to 12 months is recommended for follow-up.
