Summer may be over, but chances are excess sun exposure has left a memory or two on your skin.

And while some memories are good, these ones aren’t. Dr. Gail Nield of the Woodbridge Dermatology and Laser Centre in Toronto shares some tips and solutions with us to correct our summer sun skin blunders.

TIP: It’s easier to prevent than correct, so wear sunscreen to protect yourself from UVA and UVB rays year-round. Wear a teaspoon’s worth for the face and a shot-glass amount for the body. Plus, regularly reapply when outdoors.

Skin Blunder: Hyperpigmentation          

Summer Culprit: Sunspots, melasma (a.k.a the pregnancy mask) and freckles are caused by UV rays.          

What to Do: Try lightening topicals. Don’t fear hydroquinone, but only use it as a short-term fix.

Skin Blunder: Redness           

Summer Culprit: Due to flushing and visible blood vessels.

What to Do: Redness is often misdiagnosed as rosacea. Ensure a proper diagnosis and then use a redness-reducing product.

Summer Culprit: Caused by environmental damage, not chronological aging.           

What to Do: Stimulate collagen formation and plump the skin by looking for products with retinoids, stem cells and peptides.
