With the awareness growing about the risks associated with tanning either the traditional way, in the natural sun (preferably on the beach), or the modern way, in a tanning bed, it’s no wonder that faux tanning products are growing in popularity. According to Health Canada, on sun-exposed skin, up to 90% of skin aging is due to the deleterious effects of the sun. Meanwhile tanning beds can expose you to five times more radiation than the natural sun.

Skip out on the dangers of harmful UVA and UVB rays and keep your skin looking young with our favourite bronzing products. But before you slather yourself in faux tanner, to make sure you don’t end up looking like an oompa loompa here are tips to ensure your tan will be just the right amount of colour for your complexion:

Do’s

  • For an even finish on your baked look, make sure you exfoliate your skin prior to applying the bronzing mist or cream. This will ensure that any dead skin is removed and will help you to avoid darker patches.
  • Apply your tanner after showering and toweling off in your shower stall or tub. This will help you to avoid any messes on your furniture or flooring.
  • Always apply after the shower before moisturizer to remove excess oils that will prevent the faux tan formula from sticking. Just be sure to make sure your skin is completely dry.

Don’ts

  • Don’t wear expensive undergarments or clothing when applying faux tanning products, often before the product has fully absorbed into your skin staining of fabrics can occur.
  • After applying, avoid immediate contact with water so the colouring will last longer.
  • Don’t over do it! When it comes to bronzing products it’s easy to get carried away, but the key is to keep your tan looking similar to a natural sun-kissed look. If you want to darken your faux-tan colour, don’t make it happen over night, just do so gradually over time.
