Canada'a Top Beauty and Wellness Brands We Love

Always one to celebrate our gorgeous landscapes and friendly faces, Canada often leaves out its industry leaders in the beauty and wellness spaces. Here, we’re celebrating Canada’s 150 years of history with brands born and operating in Canada, both young and old, that fill us up with true patriot love.

Island Joy

A young and craft brand, Toronto-based Island Joy came out of  the founders love for homemade sugar scrubs. After creating a sugar scrub with a to-die-for island-inspired scent for family and friends the Toronto mother-daughter duo happened upon their new company. Handmade in small batches, each product contains natural, pronounceable ingredients and each scent has a story behind it, inspired by a friendship or an island memory. The latest edition to the made-in-Canada lineup, the Cuban Lemon Lip Scrub ($20, islandjoy.ca) is the perfect exfoliator and moisturizer to prep your pucker for summer’s hottest statement lippies while the Jamaican Grapefruit Sugar Scrub ($39, islandjoy.ca), enriched with antioxidants and glycolic acid, is perfect for keeping legs silky smooth for your summer beach trips.

Groom

A Canadian collaboration, this Montreal-based men’s grooming brand was formed when three friends decided it was high time they introduced a men’s care line to the market that actually met their needs. For this brand, the whole process, from development to testing to production is carried out in Montreal for uncompromising quality. Handmade in small batches, this is a brand that consistently impresses us here at the Elevate headquarters (and our partners). While the brand is still new to market (it was created in 2013), it’s making big strides in the still emerging men’s grooming and care segment. While the Tobacco Beard Oil is a favourite of ours, the Les industries groom Shaving Cream ($24, lesindustriesgroom.com) offers up a luxurious shave with a scent that reminds of Canada’s great outdoors.

Zorah Biocosmétiques

The idea behind Zorah Biocosmétiques began in 2003, when company co-founder and president Mélissa Harvey travelled to Morocco with Oxfam Quebec to live and work with a group of Berber women who grew, harvested and exported argan oil. Harvey bought up all the argan oil she could and brought it back to Montreal, selling it at Jean-Talon market, where she met her co-founder. Three years later, Zorah hit the market and continues to be designed and manufactured in Quebec. Fair trade, cruelty-free and featuring organic ingredients, Zorah’s lineup is formulated without any of the nasty stuff that is harmful to your health and the environment. To this day, each of Zorah’s products feature argan oil sourced from the same Berber women Harvey worked with in Morocco. In fact, to keep up with Zorah’s demand, the village has grown, providing jobs to women in neighbouring areas and helping to build a strong community that has established its first restaurant and school. For the perfect introduction to the brand, try Zorah Biocosmétiques’ c-nature Anti-Aging Complex ($100, zorahbiocosmetiques.com), featuring vitamin C and hyaluronic acid to moisturize while reducing the appearance of fine lines and dark spots.

Reversa

Owned by Dermtek, the original owners of the popular Ombrelle suncare brand, all-Canadian anti-aging brand Reversa was born in 1994. Emerging out of the natural connection between photo-aging and skin aging, Reversa was created as a response to correcting the damage done by the sun (if you didn’t wear your Ombrelle, that is). One of Canada’s first brands to feature glycolic acid as an active ingredient, Reversa has quickly become a popular dermatologist-recommended anti-aging name, boasting paraben-free formulations and many vegan and cruelty-free options. For the perfect day-night pairing, we recommend Reversa’s Radiance Cream SPF 30 ($49, pharmacies and reversa.ca) and Anti-Spot Night Care ($40, pharmacies and reversa.ca). Both formulas reduce the appearance of brown spots and acne scars with the power of Rumex extract, which is derived from the plant that is native to Canada’s prairies.

Escents

Founder of Vancouver-based Escents, Jacqui MacNeill, a lover of nature and outdoor adventures, began exploring the powers of essential oils while travelling but it wasn’t until she faced a life-threatening seizure while 38 weeks pregnant with twins and receiving two brain surgeries that this interest became her passion. According to a multitude of studies, scent can help to improve memory, trigger emotions and foster positive thinking. In MacNeill’s case, scent allowed her body to heal and eventually flourish. Since then, Escents has expanded its plant-based natural wellness and personal care offerings from being available at just one kiosk in Vancouver to locations across Canada and worldwide. We recommend following MacNeill’s lead and heading out to explore the outdoors in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary with Escents’ Outdoor Essentials Bundle ($35, escents.ca). Featuring four outdoor essentials, the Itch B' Gone roll-on is an absolute must-have to soothe those itchy rashes or irritating bug bites.

Baffin

Turning 20 this year, Baffin was inspired by founder Paul Hubner’s father, Peter, who worked alongside local Inuit in Canada’s Arctic region to source material for creating footwear with a multi-layered structure. Inspired by this innovative structure, Baffin offers footwear that is ready to take on Canada’s toughest climes. While city streets and hiking trails are considered a stroll in the park for this brand, adventure-seekers can put the brand through its paces and be sure their footwear will hold out—in fact, the founder does just that himself. Explore Canada’s great outdoors with free access to Canada Parks this year with Baffin in tote. Take to Canada’s trails with Baffin’s Swamp Buggy hiking shoes ($94.99, baffin.com) or toss a pair of Packables rain boots ($94.99, baffin.com), which easily fold into a pouch for convenient travel, in your bag for wetter days on the West Coast.
