Got Burned?

Here’s what to do.

  1. Get out of the sun immediately.
  2. Soothe your burn with a towel dipped in a home remedy of milk and water. “The protein in milk will interact with sunburn cells to calm your burn,” says Dr. Julia Carroll, MD, FRCPC, a dermatologist and co-founder of Compass Dermatology.
  3. Under the care of a physician, use a topical steroid to remove heat from the burned area. Take an ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.
  4. “Seek out soothing, hydrating skin-care ingredients that calm inflammation, such as arnica, shea butter, sodium hyaluronate and oats,” says Ellis Holevas, director of education at BeautyNext Gorup. “Inflammation is the first step to hyperpigmentation.”
  5. Whether it’s skin cancer or wrinkles, stop long-term damage in its tracks by using a vitamin C serum for a few days on the burned area.
