It’s no surprise to find the inclusion of many botanical ingredients in today’s skincare products, but do you know where they're sourced?

Some of them are sourced from and native to parts of Europe. Here, we take a tour of some of the most popular skincare botanicals and the ares from which they hail.

Camomile, Lavendar, Rose and Calendula

These ingredients are commonly found in skincare products and aromatherapy tools to help nourish the skin and calm the mind. While there are species found all over the world, many are native to Europe, including areas of Great Britain, the Canary Islands, the Meditteranean, Germany, Rome and Provence, France.161123 botanicallybuilt caudalie

Grapes (Brodeaux, France)

They say that a glass of red wine a day will keep the doctor away, but the truth is that grapes and grapevines can be beneficial for your skin as well. Olivier Paris, Caudalie pharmacist, says,  “Vine stalks, grape seeds and sap are used to extract polyphenols, resveratrol and viniferine, which are our main active ingredients.” These help protect skin from free radicals, reverse signs of aging and brighten your complexion. Try Caudalie Paris Polyphenol C15 Overnight Detox Oil ($59, ca.caudalie.com, sephora.com).

Olives (Mediterranean)

You’ve probably heard your grandmother tell you that she uses olive oil on her face and in her hair, but it’s also harnessed in another form. According to Kiehl’s, “Squalane is a highly refined moisturizing oil that is steam distilled from the olive.” Though this ingredient used to be sourced from the livers of sharks, you can now rest easy knowing that your skin care includes this hydrating Mediterranean oil.

Edelweiss Flow161123 botanicallybuilt kiehlser (Switzerland)

Not just a song from The Sound of Music, this little white flower that is native to the Alps is cultivated for its survivor status. Since the flower is used to a harsh climate of cold temperatures, high altitudes and UV rays, it’s harnessed to help protect your skin against just that. Try Kiehl's Ultra Facial Deep Moisture Balm ($34, Kiehl's stores, kiehls.ca).
