You’ve spent the summer enjoying the sun, but even if you were diligent in your SPF rituals, there may still be some signs of too much fun in the sun showing on your skin.

Sun Damage: Signs of Photo Aging

Indicators that you’ve spent too much time in the sun can come in many different shapes and sizes, but almost all fall under signs of “photoaging.” Photoaging, defined as “premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation” by the Canadian Dermatology Association (dermatology.ca), has several different signs for you to keep a lookout for.

Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Fine lines and deep-set wrinkles start to appear around your eyes, mouth and forehead. You’ll likely notice these lines in areas that you’d get them anyway (hello, crow’s feet and frown lines), but sun exposure expedites the aging process, defining those lines sooner than expected.

Dull Skin Texture

One of the hallmarks of sun damage on your skin is poor texture and overall dullness, as well as reduced elasticity. A general loss of skin tone in sun-exposed areas is common, as well as leathery-looking and saggy skin. A vintage leather purse is great, but we definitely know that’s not the look we’re going for with our faces, and we assume you aren’t either!

Brown Spots and Discolouration

Those new freckles that popped up mid-July? Not as cute as they seem. The Canadian Dermatology Association lists brown spots, freckles and spider veins on the nose, cheeks and neck as results of sun damage in the form of hyperpigmentation.
