Of all of the skin care trends, elixirs perplex us the most: Is it a serum? Or is it an essence lotion? Perhaps the elixir seems so mysterious because it is so versatile? After all, an elixir can be used for practically anything. Due to it’s multitasking nature we embrace the elixir, and share a few of our favourites here with you.

The word elixir literally means a magical or medicinal potion, and the concoction is said to prolong life indefinitely—hello, anti-aging! Made up of essential oils, elixirs nourish and hydrate the skin and can be applied after cleansing, where the nutrients are delivered straight to the cellular level. Although made of oils, elixirs are incredibly lightweight and can be applied over foundation to set your powder makeup, or even just as an afternoon pick-me-up facial spray at your desk to perk up your tired skin.

Vichy Neovadiol Magistral Elixir ($58, drugstores): Specifically designed for post-menopausal skin, this elixir targets lipid replenishment, which decreases as we age. This formula fortifies the skin with omegas-3, -6 and -9 and gives the skin a denser, smoother appearance.

Skeyndor Lift Contour Elixir, Face & Neck ($150, Oakville Beauty Institute, Catwalk Salon Spa, Serenity Oasis Holistic Day Spa): This serum boasts the power of three serums in one bottle: using the Global Lift line signature Progen-in technology, it focuses on firming the skin around the jaw line for a rejuvenated face. A tiny bit of this serum goes a long way, so it’s worth the splurge.
