Roll your way to healthier, more radiant skin.

14 07 21 microneedling

Despite using a quality SPF, eating a healthy diet and getting adequate sleep, does your complexion lack lustre, youthfulness or a radiant glow? While certain laser treatments can help target all of the above, they can also be costly, require downtime and are not recommended during the summer months, when our sun exposure is at its peak. Thankfully, there’s a more natural approach to consider called microneedling. Practised in Europe for years, micro-needling, also known as  collagen induction therapy, is now much better known thanks to its promising benefits. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Jennifer Aniston recently proclaimed her love for it, too.

Origins and Science of Microneedling

Originally developed in Germany, micro-needling is minimally invasive, non-ablative and non-surgical. Comprised of a hand-held device with a rolling head of micro-sized needles measuring 0.2  to 2.5 millimetres, the device is rolled over the  skin in small sections at a time, applying marginal pressure in various directions.

As the roller moves, the needles penetrate the skin approximately 1.5 to 2 millimetres into the dermis.  Typically, the skin may bleed for a short time and/or swell due to micro-bruising, but the intent is to safely penetrate the skin and initiate a natural healing process in the form of increased collagen and elastin production—both key factors for healthier, youthful skin.

Quick and Pain-Free

Performed in office by a trained professional, treatments take less than an hour.  Afterwards, skin may appear slightly puffy and swollen, but there is next to no pain or discomfort.

Patricia Pezzano, owner of APT Medical Aesthetics Spa stands fully behind the procedure, “To target, treat and rejuvenate skin, stimulation of collagen and elastin production is key.  What I love about microneedling is that it naturally works with the body’s receptors to stimulate both safely and effectively.  When combined with very effective skin care, the results are truly remarkable.”

Results seen with Micro-needling may include:

  • Aged and sun-damaged skin appears lifted and smooth
  • Reduction in scars caused by acne, surgery or burns
  • Less pronounced stretch marks
  • Improvement and fading of  fine lines and deep wrinkles
  • Reduction in uneven skin pigmentation
  • Reduction in enlarged open pores

Improvements can be seen within six to eight weeks, with skin looking even better over the following months.  While every case is unique, most patients will see and experience longer, more noticeable results with three to four treatments, spaced six to eight weeks in between.

Results can be maintained in the long term with the at-home version, Dermaroller, which is easy to use and painless and takes only 15 to 20 minutes to do on your own. When combined with in-office treatments, plus a high quality skin-care line, you’re guaranteed results. With every treatment, skin benefits much more from the infusion of active ingredients contained in the formulas.  Studies show up to 200 times better penetration.

Because of this increased opportunity to really penetrate the skin, the importance of using quality skin-care can’t be stressed enough. Swissclinical (swissclinical.com) is unique in its commitment to using only the purest, most naturally-derived ingredients, including glacial water sourced from Switzerland.  Free of allergens, parabens, paraffin, colourants and harmful substances, many of the formulas are contained in glass bottles, with no harm to the environment.

When undergoing microneedling and/or using the at-home Dermaroller, Swissclinical’s Regenerating Cream, in particular, helps reduce redness caused by the treatments while soothing the skin.  For ongoing care, the Intense line includes an antioxidant-rich day and night serum, as well as a Moisturizing Concentrate to nourish, strengthen and protect most effectively.

Cost: Approximately $400 per individual treatment.

Microneedling experienced

I recently put microneedling to the test, which included an in-office treatment and regular use of the Dermaroller (three times  per week) in conjunction with the Swissclinical skin-care line.

Within several weeks, my skin took-on a healthier glow.  The size of my pores was significantly reduced, and fine lines appeared less noticeable.  The biggest surprise? How much better our skin “took” to the Swissclinical day and night formulas, which included a serum, hydrator and night cream. The diligence of this regimen revealed a healthier and radiant glow.  Now hooked on the Dermaroller and new skin routine, there are no plans to stop anything. Afterall, why change a good thing? Unless Mother Nature decides to turn our aging clock to ‘Off.’
