Detox tips and topicals to get glowing skin for summer.

14 06 10 detox1From those green-veggie juice cleanses and grapefruit diets, to Dr. Oz’s colon-cleaning plan and Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous 300-calorie-per-day diet of lemon water, carrot soup and handfuls of seeds, pretty much everyone knows that detoxes are all the rage these days.

And while some can be beneficial to your body (reminder: speak to your health care provider before starting a detox), you might not realize that it’s your largest organ, your skin, that’s probably most in need of some serious purification, rejuvenation and refining.

A Balanced Diet for the Skin

Enter RVB, an Italian brand that’s been dedicated to creating scientifically innovative, high-quality cosmetics and aesthetic treatments since its inception in the 1960s. With detoxification products among the must-haves in the beauty aisles, the RVB Skin Lab “cosmeceutical” line’s new Detox Treatment eliminates harmful toxins and keeps skin strong, moisturized, glowing and full of vitamins and minerals.

“Similar to our bodies, our skin needs a balanced diet to stay healthy and young. For this reason, all of our products contain 20 amino acids, 16 vitamins (like folic acid, retinol and riboflavin), six trace elements and minerals, three nucleic acids, four ceramides, two cellular osmo-protectors and three hyaluronic acids,” explains Cristina Ramirez, president of Intercosmetics, the company that distributes RVB in Canada, and director of Gina’s College of Advanced Aesthetics in Mississauga, Ontario. “These are the necessary nutrients to prevent premature aging, rosacea, acne, dryness and all other skin problems.”

Start a “Cleanse” in Time for Summer

Sure, a good detox is important any time of year, but Ramirez says it’s vital when the skin is faced with illness, environmental pollution, excess stress and the sun. “In the summer, we expose ourselves to the outdoors much more, so our skin is subject to pollution, UV rays and sweat. Detoxification works at the cellular level to combat these enemies of the skin.”

The secret behind RVB’s Detox Treatment is an ingredient called cell detoxium, which stimulates the part of the cell—the autophagosomes—that collects and removes cellular waste: “Think of it as the garbage men who collect garbage from your house,” explains Ramirez. “Autophagosomes take the cellular waste and remove it out of the cell, where it can be broken down and disposed of. This is a natural process but one that sometimes gets slowed. The cell detoxium actually stimulates and encourages this natural process, which is especially helpful when it has been slowed due to stress and aging.”

Skin Detox Diet Tips

Combine your topical detox regimen with a healthy skin-loving diet. Here are some tips to channel a younger and clearer complexion from the inside out.

1. Avoid congesting foods

Our oil glands become overstimulated, resulting in infection that surfaces as acne. Stimulation is caused by various factors, including hormones, adrenal function, liver, kidney and digestive function and finally our diet. Foods known to cause congestion include:

•Animal fats (especially red meats and pork)

• Dairy products (cheese, yogurt, butter)

• Chocolate and sweets (baked foods with refined sugars, white flour and hidden fats)

2. Cut stimulating foods & substances

The stimulation of stress glands causes oil glands in our body to flow more and also increases our body temperature. This irritates sensitive skin, causing redness, spots or blemishes.

Foods to avoid or enjoy in moderation include:

• Chili, curry, spicy dishes

• Alcohol

• Caffeine

• Nicotine

• Oranges and strawberries

TIP: Kick-start your liver function and begin hydrating your body by drinking a glass of lemon water upon rising. The antioxidants in the lemon also help to keep our skin blemish-free! Simply squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass of water and enjoy this refreshing morning pick-me-up.
