Hollywood’s hottest celebrities are all becoming redheads, and so can you!

Stars like Rachel McAdams, Megan Fox, and Dianna Agron, are all flaunting new fiery shades of red hair. Celebrity stylist and Matrix Artistic Director, Ammon Carver reveals the appeal behind these celebrity dye jobs and shares tips on dying and maintaining red manes.

How to pick the right red hair colour

Why do Rachel McAdams, Megan Fox, and Dianna Argon all look great as redheads? Carver reveals the physics behind finding the best red for you:

If you have fair skin: Brighter reds bring colour to your skin tone. That’s why Dianna Argon, who has naturally light hair, looks gorgeous with fiery red locks that accentuate her fair skin.

If you’re yellow toned: Go for an auburn hue to avoid looking washed out or pale. Rachael McAdams is a natural brunette, and is more yellow toned, so her auburn hair accents her skin tone and beautiful eyes.

If your skin tone is olive: Rich, darker reds will flatter you and highlight your skintone. With Megan Fox’s olive skin tone, a warm, rich, deep red complements her best.

If your hair is grey: Typically warm and vibrant reds create a more youthful look while deep, muted reds can create a more mature look. If your natural hair is grey, you’ll want to make sure you let your colourist know so they can formulate appropriately. For small amounts of grey strands, you can go with a pure red-red auburn colour selection. If you have more grey hair, go with a neutral tone that takes up 50% of the formula to make sure your hair doesn’t turn neon orange. Get your colourist to help you!

If your eyebrows don’t match your new red hue, it’s okay! Brown brows work best with red hair as they create a more natural look.

How to make red hair colour last

Use a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for colour-treated hair. Rinse with cold water to keep hair cuticles closed.

Try: L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Color Vibrancy Nourishing Shampoo & Conditioner ($4.99 each, lorealparisusa.com), it nourishes colour-treated hair and protects colour from fading.

Exposure to the sun can cause your hair colour to fade or oxidize more quickly into an undesired, brassy tone. Before spending time in the sun, apply a leave-in conditioner to protect your strands and use hair products with a UV filter. An easy solution? Apply a conditioning mask to your hair and then slick it back into a simple chignon—you’ll save your tresses from the sun and also give it a deep conditioning treatment at the same time!

Try: Free of parabens and sulfates, Alba Botanica® Hawaiian Colorific Plumeria Shampoo and Conditioner ($10.50, albabotanica.com). Containing vitamin rich Plumeria, pineapple, and papaya, it preserves hair colour and nourishes damaged hair cuticles.
