Curls

Want beautiful, healthy looking curls without using an iron or rollers? Try these expert tips to help you work with your waves.

We asked Morgan Willhite, Creative Director at Ouidad, a hair care line developed just for curly hair, to give us her steps to getting springy, smooth coils.

1. Never brush your hair

"You never want to brush curly or textured hair. When using a tool that contains a lot of teeth, like a brush (or even some combs), the hair tends to expand, causing the curls to separate and look dry, frizzy and unhealthy," says Willhite. "The only time you should detangle your hair would be in the shower with a conditioner."

Try: Ouidad Double Detangler comb ($24, Sephora). The double row of perfectly spaced teeth can get through knots in the most dense, curly hair quickly without creating frizz or ruining your curl. The rounded tips are also soft on the scalp.

2. Avoid harsh chemicals

"Try to avoid over processing curly hair as it tends to be on the dry side and chemically processing can make it worse," says Willhite.

Willhite also suggests opting for ammonia free hair colour. "Curly hair absorbs color more because of it naturally being on the dry side. Avoid stripping your color and try to stay close to what's natural. Color looks best when hair is shiny and healthy!"

3. Follow these styling secrets

"Get a small trim (1/2 inch) every 3 to 4 months," says Willhite. "Regular trims help the hair grow longer and healthier."

After stepping out of the shower with your freshly detangled curls, use a styling gel that offers curl definition, moisturization and frizz control, says Willhite. Then let hair air dry or use a hair dryer on low heat with a diffuser.

Try: Ouidad Tress Effects Styling Gel ($15, Sephora). This lightweight blend of proteins and vitamin B5 works with your curl pattern to give natural looking, frizz- free hold without weighing down hair or giving it that "crunchy" texture a lot of gels leave behind. Bonus: it also comes with incredibly detailed directions on the bottle for proper application.

4. Consider leave in conditioners

Special treatments now and then are needed to restore your waves to their full glory, especially in the cold winter months. "Curls can lose nutrients, especially when they're dry and weather damaged," says Willhite. "Make a deep treatment a part of your regimen. Deep Treatments are like a multivitamin for hair. The Ouidad 12 Minute Deep Treatment ($25-50, Sephora) keeps hair healthy and strong while also keeping curls defined and frizz-free."

Apply to damp hair, the cover it with a shower cap before heating with a blow dryer. Allow the warm product to saturate the hair for 12 minutes. Before rinsing out in the shower, add some regular conditioner to the hair.

5. Find your moisture balance

Balancing your curls' need for moisture can be tough if you have fine or limp hair. Moisturizing conditioners and leave in products may weigh down your tresses and make them look greasy.

Try: Ouidad PlayCurl Volumizing Conditioner ($17, Sephora). Get manageable, soft curls that aren't weighed down with this infusion of arnica flower extract, wheat protein, hydrolyzed silk and volumizing polymers. Leave in for three minutes before rinsing with warm water and prepare for your hair to feel super soft, with an extra boost of body and bounce.
