1. Be gentle.

When applying any creams or makeup to the eye area, use your fourth finger and gently tap in any product you’re using says, Amy Chen Scientific Communication and Training Leader for SkinCeuticals.

2. Wear sunglasses.

The combination of constantly squinting your eyes and damaging UVA and UVB rays from the sun can speed up aging (read: wrinkles) in the eye area. Purchase a pair of sunglasses with protection from both kinds of rays and make sure they are big enough to cover the area. Here’s a guide for picking the right ones for you.

3. Get your antioxidants.

To battle any photodamage on your delicate skin under the eye, make sure to use an eye cream with antioxidants in it. This is a preventative ingredient that can fight free radical damage caused by sun, pollutions, smoking, etc. We recommend SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel Antioxidant Eye Treatment ($80, at doctors’ offices and medspas) to protect and correct the skin under the eyes. Chen also recommends using a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher sunscreen around the eye area.

4. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!

Hydrated skin ages better, and “makes your face appear more youthful than a heavily made up complexion,” says makeup artist Jodi Urichuk of the Plutino Group. Drinking a ton of water, taking an omega-3 fatty acids daily, and eating flaxseeds will help hydrate skin from the inside out, and help any topical creams do their job better. Urichuk suggests using a BB or CC cream, or tinted moisturizers, to avoid dry patches and uneven texture around the eye. She likes Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 Tone Correcting Moisturizer with Sunscreen ($32.99, at mass market retailers).

5. Use concealer—but make sure it’s the right shade.

Concealer is essential for covering dark circles, but if it’s the wrong shade it can make you look worse. Concealer that is too light actually exaggerates fine lines. Here are some tips for finding your correct concealer shade.

Since the skin under your eyes is very delicate, apply concealer with a brush. It will distribute colour more evenly and avoid the cake-y look that adds years, says Urichuk.

6. Battle under eye circles.

Dr. Sheldon V. Pollack, M.D., FRCPC, at the Toronto Cosmetic Skin Surgery Centre, suggests looking for creams with Vitamin K to improve the appearance of dark circles, like Alyria Anti-Dark Circle Eye Cream ($60, at physician's offices). Use underneath your makeup for best results.

Dr. Andre Gantous, MD, FRCS(C), FACS, Facial Plastic Surgery/Otolaryngology and Neck Surgery prescribes Lumixyl cream ($120 for a three-month supply) at his clinic. The cream contains skin-brightening peptides rather than hydroquinone, and must be used in combination with sun protection.

7. Use an Eye Primer

Primers are great for creating a flawless, smooth canvas for makeup application, help makeup blend more easily, and extend the longevity of your shadow says Urichuk. Note: stay away from illuminating primers as they can highlight unflattering folds.

8. Use highlighters and shimmer sparingly.

If used incorrectly, a sparkly makeup can magnify fine lines. Restrict its use to the inner corner of your eyes and the centre of the lid if your eyes aren’t crepey, says Urichuk. Try using YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch luminizing pen ($50, Sephora) on the inner corner and along the lower lash line of the eye. Look for matte or satin finish shadows that will bring out the colour of your eyes, not the texture of your skin. If you really love shimmer, Urichuk suggests “blending with a buffer or foundation brush so it is seamless with your bronzer or blush.”

9. Be preventative.

Botox and fillers can dramatically improve the appearance of the eye area without surgery. “If a patient has a volume loss or teartrough (deep groove) under the eyelids, we inject fillers such as Juvéderm or Restylane,” says Dr. Benjamin Barankin, MD, FRCPC, FAAC, a Toronto dermatologist and medical director of the Toronto Dermatology Centre. This adds volume to the area and provides support and lift to smooth out lines and wrinkles. Using injectables can also help slow down the development of additional lines and wrinkles by reducing muscle movement. The cost depends on amount injected and number of injection sites. Botox usually costs around $300, and fillers around $500.

10. Don’t use eyeliner and mascara on lower lash line.

Eyeliner can make eyes look smaller and tired if used incorrectly. “Mascara on the bottom lashes highlights crow’s feet and dark circles,” says Urichuk. Plus, eyes look naturally brighter when left bare along the bottom lash line. Use eyeliner to draw a thin line along the upper lash line, making the line thicker as you near the outer corner of the eye for a subtle cat eye. Resist the urge and leave bottom lashes bare.

11. Remove your makeup every night.

“Removing makeup at night is really important to keep lashes full and to avoid getting any premature wrinkles as long as possible,” says Urichuk. If you tend to wear a lot of makeup, use an oil-based remover that will effectively cut through stubborn makeup and avoid tugging on the eye. We recommend Lierac Comfort Cleanser for Face and Eyes ($29, at drugstores).

12. Consider non-invasive treatments.

There are a variety of laser treatments available that allow skincare professionals to target certain areas and treat certain conditions. Resurfacing lasers, like Fractionated Erbium or CO2 can dramatically tighten up the skin around the eyes with two to seven days of downtime, depending on the strength of laser. Costs start at $800. “Mircrodermabrasion and chemical peels should not be performed around the eyes due to the sensitivity of the area and delicacy of the skin,” says Dr. Barankin.

13. Enhance your lashes.

If you wear mascara, reach for a formula that will give your lashes more length or curl. It helps provide a youthful wide-eyed look and draws attention to your eyes—and not to the skin around them. Try: Maybelline Volum’ Express The Mega Plush mascara ($8, at drugstores) uses a gel-mousse formula to prevent brittleness.

As we age it’s common for our lashes to loose their length and volume. You can try eyelash extensions—individually glued on synthetic lashes—that add instant oomph. The glue used is similar to surgical adhesive and you won’t even need to wear mascara with them. The cost ranges between $75 to $275, with refills every four weeks starting at $60.

14. Get bold brows.

“A full groomed brow gives the face a youthful lift,” says Urichuk. Fill in any gaps in your brows with a fine point brow pencil in short, light strokes. Then apply a brow powder with an angled brush for definition. Brush into place with a brow mousse or gel. Try Urban Decay Brow Box ($35,, which has all you need—mini tweezers, brushes, brow powder and wax.

15. Raise your brows.

For some, rejuvenating the eye area may involve a brow lift. “The upper eyelid and the brow are intrinsically connected,” explains Dr. Torgerson, MD, PhD, FRCSC, an otolaryngologist head and neck surgeon practicing in facial plastic surgery in Toronto. As your brow ages, it can cause heaviness and hooding on the upper eyelids. Brow lifts can cost anywhere between $5,000 to $8,000.

There’s also the option to try a non-invasive brow lifting treatment, like Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound technology to tighten skin in a safe yet powerful way. “Combining it with Botox to give an added brow lift makes it even more powerful," says Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, MD, FRCPC, dermatologist and medical director of the Bay Dermatology Centre. The procedure costs $1,000 and the results, which are noticeable within three months, can last as long as ten years.

16. Stay away from red and deep purple tones.

Dark colours like eggplant and oxblood bring out red and blue undertones in the skin, making eyes look more tired when used as an eye shadow. Instead, Urichuk suggests picking shades that make your eye colour pop. Find out which eye shadow shades work best for you by using the Fitzpatrick Skin Type test.

17. Grow longer lashes.

Long, full lashes are synonymous with youth. You may want to try Latisse, a prescription eyelash growth serum. “It’s…been proven in clinical trials to increase lash length by 25 percent, darken them by 18 per cent, and create a significant amount of fullness,” says Dr. Kucy Pon, MD, FRCP(C), a dermatologist at Sunnybrook Hospital Health Sciences Centre and an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Toronto. Risks are minimal and include darkening of the lid and itchy red, eyes. Once you stop using Latisse, your lashes return to their natural growth speed. The cost is about $120 for 3 ml bottle, $200 for a 5 ml bottle. Apply nightly with sterile brushes for at least eight weeks, and expect full growth by week 16.

18. Eat more iron.

In addition to a lack of sleep, iron deficiency may be causing you under eye circles to look darker. Menstruation, infection and poor diet cause low iron, which reduces the oxygen supply to your tissues and causes blood to pool around the eyes resulting in the dark bags we all see, says Natasha Klemm, a Naturopathic Doctor at Infinity Health Centre in downtown Toronto. Foods, such as red meat and dark leafy greens contain iron. Taking supplements for six to 12 months may be required to adequately raise your iron levels. Take 45 mg of heme iron with 1000 mg of Vitamin C to increase iron absorption.

19. Use the tea bag trick.

It’s not just an old wives tale; cold tea bags, particularly black, green or chamomile, have anti-inflammatory properties that will bring down swelling of tired, puffy eyes says Urichuk. Simply brew tea, then place the tea bags in the fridge until they cool down. Place on closed eyelids for 8-10 minutes.

20. Bring out the big guns.

If none of the above tips or tricks are making you happy about your appearance, you may want to look into blepharoplasty, an eyelid lift surgery. There are many different types of eye surgeries that can address a wide range of issues. The results are eyes that look smoother, bigger and less tired. See a Before and After of the procedure here.
